Sandy 10 2021 CANCELLED

An email has been sent to every entrant for the 2021 race (i.e. those that deferred their entry from the 2020 race) containing information about the cancellation of the 2021 race.

Please see the SANDY 10 Race website for details.

SANDY 10 RACE CANCELLED

14 Jul 2020 10:15:00

Dear runner,

Today marks the two-months-out point from the rescheduled Sandy 10 2020 race, which was organised to take place on 13 September.

When we made the unavoidable decision to postpone back in March, the thinking was to get to this point, assess how the public health situation is looking, and give all our entrants ample notice that we are either going full steam ahead, or pulling the race.

Now we’re here, and looking around us we feel it would be irresponsible to do anything other than cancel the rearranged Sandy 10.

I’m sure the reasons for this are obvious to you all, but aside from the current distance there is between gatherings of up to six people – as are permitted now – and the go-ahead for a gathering of up to 600 we would need to offer a full-flavour race, I would like to refer you back to a couple of points we made at the time of our initial postponement:

The last thing any of us want to do is feel we are putting our runners and volunteers at risk, or adding to anyone's sense of unease … Our races pride themselves on being among the sporting highlights of the local calendar, and we don't want our community to feel that a 600-strong field running in their streets is anything to be frightened of.”

As race director, I cannot in good conscience say that putting on a race in two months’ time will not be a source of worry to people. We have already received word from runners who had chosen to defer that they will not be turning up on race day.

Put simply, 13 September is arriving more quickly than the public health situation is improving.

In recent months we have asked you to decide whether you would like to defer your entry, to donate your entry fee to Sue Ryder St Johns, or to receive a refund.

The response was beautiful: well over half the field stayed in. From those who dropped out of the field, over £700 in entry fees were donated to charity.

Despite the challenges we’ve faced this year as a race – and I don’t mind telling you, this has been a weird year to be a first-time race director – the Sandy 10 is not in trouble.

I walked into the role to be informed that previous good management of the race meant we have a “rainy day fund” to fall back on.

The coronavirus crisis has been that rainy day.

But though it has cost us financially, with some deposits on essential services now lost twice over, we are weathering it and will return when it is safe to do so.

A virtual race? Have your say

Some people have raised the prospect of the Sandy 10 morphing into a virtual 10-mile race, and before we get to another round of defer/donate/refund, I would like to invite opinions on this.

We have polls on the race's Facebook and Twitter pages – feel free to have your say there (once only – don’t vote in both!) or to drop us an email to sandy10bac@gmail.com with the subject as follows:

Sandy 10 virtual race: YES
or
Sandy 10 virtual race: NO

Feel free to add any further thoughts in the mail itself (all will be read), or to leave the main message blank.

Note that a virtual race would allow you to run 10 miles anywhere (within reason – no 10-mile downhill slopes!) – you would not have to run the Sandy 10 course.

More information on virtual races can be found here.

Polls will close in seven days’ time, on 20 July.

Should the appetite not be there to justify us putting on a virtual Sandy 10, you will have the option of deferring once again. And this time, as thanks for sticking with us, those deferring will – shhhhhh – avoid a slight price hike for 2021.

We dearly hope this mail has found you safe and well, and profound apologies if it has darkened your day in any way. We are so disappointed that we will not been able to put on the race we had planned – but oh my days are we going to make it up to you when we get the opportunity …

All the very best in these surreal times.

Summary

Entrants are invited to enter and run the Beds AAA 10K course in Bedford that has been used annually for the past 3 years for the Beds AAA 10k race. The course starts and finishes at Bedford Priory Park (MK41 9DJ) and is entirely traffic free on metalled cycle ways. Entrants are advised to avoid popular times as the route is often used by walkers, cyclists and other runners. Social distancing guidance must be followed at all times and you should be courteous to all other cycleway users on the course. Once you have completed your run on the course and recorded it on Strava, you should email the organiser with your result. At the end of the “virtual race window of 13th June and 19th July 2020, full results will be published on the Bedfordshire AAA website.

Race procedure

Entry:

All entrants should enter the virtual race using the online entry website atwww.biggleswadeacevents.org.uk before running the virtual race. Entry is free and all entrants must be a minimum 15 years. If you qualify as a Beds county championship competitor (born in Bedfordshire or resident in Bedfordshire for the previous 9 months), tick the “Beds Championships” box.

Running the course:

Once you have entered the virtual race, choose a date and time to run the course, between 13th June and 19th July 2020. Please try to avoid popular times, which tend to be late afternoons and “cycle commuter” rush hour on weekdays. A map of the 10k course is posted on the Bedfordshire AAA website (www.bedfordshireaaa.org.uk). You should use Strava (or some other internet recording mechanism) to record your run. A Strava link to the course is available here https://www.strava.com/segments/5424376

The start line is marked in the car park behind the Bedford Priory Marina Hotel (Premier Inn) near to the entrance gates to the Marina. It is marked “10K-S”. The finish line is marked on the cycleway just beyond the two metal gates (2m high). It is marked “10K-F”. Please be especially aware of traffic, cyclists and pedestrians over the first 200m of the course, especially where it crosses the road entrance to Priory Park. The course will be marked with ARROWS where it turns at junctions, but you should familiarise yourself with the course and take the map with you if you are unsure. Kilometre markers will be painted on the course where possible.

You are advised to take a mobile phone in case of emergencies whilst running the course and ensure that a family member or friend knows of your plans. Free parking is available about 400 metres from the start/finish in Aspects Leisure Park.

Results:

After your run on the course, you should email the organiser (nigelbush@hotmail.com) with your full name, date and time of run, finish time and link to your Strava (or other) recording. After the end of the “virtual race window of 13th June and 19th July 2020, full results for all competitors will be coordinated and published on the Bedfordshire AAA website.

*IMPORTANT SANDY 10 ANNOUNCEMENT***

*IMPORTANT SANDY 10 ANNOUNCEMENT***

Dear runners,

We regret to announce that the Sandy 10 and 3km fun run, scheduled for 5 April, have been postponed.

With the coronavirus pandemic causing widespread concern among the general public, and measures set to be tightened where gatherings of people in the UK are concerned, the last thing any of us want to do is feel we are putting our runners and volunteers at risk, or adding to anyone's sense of unease.

One of the following options will be available to all entrants:

• Deferment to the new race date (date TBC)

• Withdrawal from the field and donation of entry fee to our charity, Sue Ryder St John's

OR

• FULL refund for those unable to make the new date

We will email you soon to begin these processes – you will have plenty of time to decide which option you prefer.

Our races pride themselves on being among the sporting highlights of the local calendar, and we don't want our community to feel that a 600-strong field running in their streets is anything to be frightened of.

Instead this course of action and the options above are our way of showing those around us that we put them first – we are certainly mindful of the financial pressures some families will face in the coming weeks and months.

The race committee is now exploring dates later in the year, using the rescheduled London Marathon on 4 October as a pointer.

Each year many of our runners use the Sandy 10 as a key part of their training for London, and we would love to be a part of that once more.

Moving our events to later in the year does however raise many logistical headaches, not least slotting into an already packed athletics calendar.

For our part we will move quickly to re-book our suppliers, many of whom rely on races such as ours for their income – it is not lost on us that it is an extremely stressful time to be in the events business.

We will also liaise with our neighbouring clubs to try our utmost to ensure we do not clash with events of their own.

It is not a straightforward task – please bear with us and we will update you once progress has been made.

This is an extraordinary situation for race organisers everywhere, but the health of our runners and volunteers, and by extension that of the wider public, comes way before the importance of our events.

Still, we at the Sandy 10 are extremely sorry for any stress and inconvenience that these race postponements add during these difficult times.

Once we are in a position to do so, we fully intend to make it up to you.

Many thanks for your understanding.

Stuart Goodwin

Race director, Sandy 10

SANDY 10 RACE UPDATE - 14th March

14 Mar 2020 17:30:00

SANDY 10 – RACE UPDATE

Dear runners,

We at the Sandy 10 are of course tracking the latest coronavirus advice and developments. As things stand nobody is telling us not to proceed with the race on 5 April and no measures are in place to prevent us doing so. However, if that changes we will of course act accordingly.

Please bear with us – we know it’s an extremely stressful time to have imminent events in your diary, particularly when you’ve dedicated so much time to training. The Sandy 10 team have worked incredibly hard to put on a brilliant race for you, and we feel that stress too.

We also appreciate that this is an awful time for our suppliers, some of whom are small businesses completely reliant on income from races such as ours. We will do everything to help bring clarity as soon as we can.

Many thanks,

Stuart Goodwin

Race director, Sandy 10
